I am always delighted when a writer happen to capture (and order!) fluxes of thoughts and feelings while he/she is building a character. And how incredible it is when someone recreates a human mind that indeed existed, exposing its passions, regrets and dreams.

This is what Marguerite Yourcenar achieve in this masterpiece. It narrates emperor Hadrian’s memories on a letter addressed to the future princeps that he’s just selected: the young Marcus Aurelius. It’s my first Yourcenar’s book but will not be the last, for sure. Great experience, one of the best books I ever read.
