Manzoni’s The Betrothed

I recently read a famous school reading that is very popular among educators and infamous among students. Known as a foundational novel of the unified Italy The Betrothed (Alessandro Manzoni, 1827) has surprised me.

I recently listened to the audiobook version of Alessandro Manzoni’s famous novel, a foundational tale of Lombardy — one of those books teenagers never give a second chance after reading it at school. I found it so interesting that I also read the comic version the next day.

Manzoni creatively tells his story through a collection of documents left by local historians. It narrates the misadventures of a young couple of peasants prevented from marrying by an influential local boss. The couple faces many misadventures as they try to reunite, including the plague outbreak in Milan and its surroundings.

While the book’s love story may seem simplistic, the scenario and discussions presented are crucial for the analysis. While Renzo searches for Lucia, the script introduces us to the subservience (and bravery!) of religious authorities, the striking inequality in a city surrounded by walls, the demand inflation generated by famine, and even the denialism awakened by the emergent outbreak of a Pandemic — a mindblowing contemporary issue.

Discover the rich cultural heritage of Italy through the pages of this must-read romance. Perfect for anyone who loves history and wants to deepen their understanding of one of the world’s most fascinating regions.
